Know the symptoms
What a heart attack can feel like
Symptoms differ from person to person. These are the most common signals to watch for.
Chest discomfort
Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back.
- Uncomfortable pressure
- Squeezing or fullness
- Pain in the chest
Discomfort in other areas of the upper body
Symptoms can include pain or discomfort that spreads beyond the chest.
- One or both arms
- The back or neck
- The jaw or stomach
Shortness of breath
Trouble catching your breath can happen with or without chest discomfort.
- Feeling winded during simple tasks or at rest
- Breathlessness that arrives suddenly
Easy to miss
Symptoms are not always dramatic
A heart attack does not always begin with sudden, crushing pain. Some people notice only mild discomfort or unusual tiredness, and women, older adults, and people with diabetes may have symptoms that are easy to overlook. If something feels wrong, take it seriously.
Why acting early matters
Heart muscle can be damaged the longer blood flow stays blocked, so every minute counts. Call emergency services instead of driving yourself, and let the care team begin helping as soon as they reach you.
